Im new to OpenStudio, and cant figure out if its possible to use a basic sketch up model for my geometry, and then add in zones, and wall values and loads etc. into the existing geometry? Do I have to create an entirely new model from scratch? I would like to use the sketch up model the architect created.
This might be a duplicate question of this question, but additional considerations can be found in the answer there. Amir's note about gModeller and IESVE are worth exploring since you say that your model is "basic".
Yes, you will need to re-create the model in SketchUp using the OpenStudio plugin. OS does not recognize surfaces from SketchUp unless they are in a space (which is a OS object). It is much easier and faster to rebuild the model in SketchUp from scratch then to try to use the existing SketchUp model. Also, the two models will be very different due to the purpose. The architects SketchUp model is very detailed on the exterior and has wall thicknesses and other details that are not used in OS. All surfaces are only a line's width in OS, and you will want to zone out the building, not use the actual spaces as zones.
I believe that there are one or two SketchUp plug-ins that can generate gbXML. gModeller is one. And the other one is ... IES-VE? You could use one of those and then import the gbXML file into OpenStudio.
