Hello User, I use Sketch Up 2017 Make with OpenStudio plugin. What is the easiest way to add windows to the walls? I saw videos, where they just draw a rectangular on the wall and erase the face. But that doesn't work. And can I add a frame later in IDF Editor to the windows and change the u-value and so on? Regards Arne
There are three possible ways to add a window:
You can add a frame with the OpenStudio User Script "Set Windows Property Frame and Divider".

To draw a window or door you need to enter into the space/zone group you want to add the sub-surface to by double clicking it. You should be able to select a single surface of the space/zone. If not, you are not inside of that group. Then use the pencil or rectangle tool to draw the window. If this still does not work, then it is possible that the base surface is slightly out plane with the model axis and the inference engine is putting the new sub-surface in a different plane.
If you want to model window frames, you don't draw them, but instead rely on the EnergyPlus Frame and Divider Object. This is accessible in the OpenStudio Application in the sub-surfaces tab. The Frame and Divider object is associated with 1 or more sub-surfaces in the model to describe the frame and divider characteristics.

Hello Mr. Goldwasser, I have one more question too the frames. I defined my sub-surfaces in my surfaces. If I now add frames to these sub-surfaces, does the frame surround these sub-surface? Or stays the area of the sub-surface the same and consists of frame and glazed part?
based on the diagram in the link in my answer the opening size is not reduced by the frame, but of course any dividers would reduce the net opening size.
