I'm a beginner. I want to simulate annual energy consumption of a building with different periods. There should be four periods, including free running periods in autumn and spring, and air conditioning period in winter and summer. The goal is to make free-running periods as long as possible, that is to say,the air conditioning system should be operated according to comparision between the free-running simulated results and ASHRAE 55 adaptive model temperature. So, is it possible to set this in energyplus directly or I should do simulation of free-running for whole year? Thank you.

If you're simply expecting a temperature-based control of air conditioning, you could use a Dual Setpoint (Heating and Cooling) with deadband control type of thermostat. Whenever the conditioned zone temperature falls into deadband, the hvac system won't operate, but it's not constrained by seasons. If you want more sophisticated control over seasons/ based on outdoor air temperature, you could actuate setpoint schedule/thermostat control type schedule or the hvac availability schedule (dependent on what you want to control) via EMS(Energy Management System), which allows you to write your own control scripts, maybe with a sensor of outdoor air temperature. You can model a whole year in energy plus and set the HVAC system to only operate during the months / date ranges you specify.

Thanks a lot. Do you mean first I need to know the specific dates, then I set the heating and cooling schedule? In this way I need to run a whole year of free running to get the dates.

It sounds like you are trying to determine how many hours in a year you can maintain thermal comfort without your system running and then take credit for that. You should check out Appendix D.1 of the Advanced Energy Modeling for LEED Technical Manual V2. It goes over the process of doing what you are trying to do.
