launch error with OpenStudio and BEopt

My colleagues and I ran into this problem with a PC running Windows 7. OpenStudio versions before 2.0 would run fine, but versions 2.0 and later failed to launch, generating this error message: "OpenStudio has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program."

Later, we found the same computer could not launch BEopt 2.7, which would freeze after clicking OK in the startup menu. Both issues turned out to be related to the computer's graphics processor. We are posting the problem and answer in case others run into this. Answer will follow.

The problem was related to the NVIDIA graphics processor on this computer. The NVIDIA application auto-selects a graphics processor for different applications, but this didn't work for OpenStudio and BEopt. To fix this, we opened the NVIDIA Control Panel, navigated to “3D Settings” --> “Manage 3D Settings,” and selected the “Program Settings” tab. In that view, under item 1, we selected the program to customize, and under 2, we switched from “Use global settings (Auto-select: Integrated)” to “High-performance NVIDIA processor.” We repeated these steps for OpenStudio and BEopt. Thank you to Andrew and other colleagues for helping to solve this.
