How to use Openstudio-HPXML zip file for residential building energy simulation

I want to do highrise residential building energy simulation and find out about HPXML. I have downloaded the zip file but wanted to know use the same in openstudio

@Dinesh what tool are you using to generate the HPXML file? BEopt?

I have downloaded it from github. I am new in the space and looking to analyse residential building in India and cant find the option in openstudio userinput or anywhere.

@Dinesh could you provide a link to the Github repository that you downloaded the HPXML file from? That might help others provide better help.

OpenStudio-HPXML is really meant to be used by user interfaces or automated software workflows, where the software produces an HPXML file to describe a home and then runs OpenStudio-HPXML for the EnergyPlus simulation. There's nothing that stops an end user from using it directly, of course, but most end users will find it too difficult to create an HPXML file manually.

Note that HPXML is used for a variety of different use cases beyond energy modeling. So while there are a lot of software tools that can produce a HPXML file for you, these HPXMLs typically do not have sufficient detail to run OpenStudio-HPXML and produce EnergyPlus results. Software tools need to be specifically designed or updated to be able to produce an HPXML file compatible with OpenStudio-HPXML.

Also note that the next release of BEopt, version 3, will be connected to OpenStudio-HPXML. In other words, it can be used as a residential user interface to run EnergyPlus simulations via OpenStudio-HPXML, or it can be used as a user interface to produce HPXML files compatible with OpenStudio-HPXML (for further manipulation downstream).

Can you speak more about this next release of BEopt 3.0? I understood/assumed that BEopt was not supported any more. I find it's ability to generate residential models, within boundaries, useful where OpenStudio is not. Unfortunately BEopt also lacks critical capacities for model calibration and new HVAC system types. When might this release occur?

@muhl A Beta release of BEopt v3, connected to OpenStudio-HPXML, is targeted for the end of the year. It won't have any new capabilities in the model calibration area. What new HVAC system types are you looking for?

I understand if the model calibration won't available. Clearly, calibration to meet ANSI/BPI 2400 such that models and savings are compliant with IRA modeling requirements is an obvious market need. Regarding HVAC types, we need more air-source heat pump options (multi-zones with combo of ductless/ducted, updated values for cold climate equipment that may use existing boilers as backup, differentiation of a different style HVAC per unit), as well as existing system options (i.e. steam oil or gas boilers, centralized DHW with hybrid water heaters). How can I be notified of availability of v3?
