Htg/Clg season schedule in BEopt

Hi,

Does anyone know how BEopt changes the Htg/Clg season schedules? Is this an input in BEopt or is that determined behind the scenes? I would appreciate any insights.

Best, Mohammad

The BEopt heating/cooling seasons are based on the Building America definitions. Go to Help > Building America House Simulation Protocols and you can find the algorithm described on pages 59-60. There is unfortunately no way to change this from the BEopt interface.

Thank you very much @shorowit. I really appreciate your help. I have created a model in E+ first and now I am trying to replicate that in BEopt. However, I am getting totally diff results although the inputs are identical. Please see the link below for some outputs comparison.

I would appreciate it if you could help me with some insights,

Best, Mohammad

Mohammad, a few years ago I attempted to generate BEopt models replicating the PNNL single-family prototype models. I found considerable variability in the HVAC and equipment end uses, attempting to account for schedule differences. One option we found was to use BEopt v2.0 to generate E+ v8.0 IDFs that run natively in E+ (BEopt v2.8 generated E+ v8.8 IDFs that did not run natively). Depending on your needs, that could be an option: create IDFs in BEopt for import/modification in E+, rather than the other direction. If there's a way to use v2.8, Mr. Horowitz unquestionably would know. -Ben

@EBEdwards I'm not sure what you mean when you say BEopt v2.8 IDFs didn't run natively in EnergyPlus. BEopt uses the official releases of EnergyPlus and does not do anything special when running the simulations. Any IDF generated by a version of BEopt should work w/ the appropriate version of EnergyPlus (which comes bundled with BEopt).

Scott, Mohammad, I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I and colleagues had used v2.0 to generate geometry / "rough draft" IDFs with success (design in BEopt v2.0 -> run simulation -> copy temporary IDF -> modify as needed -> finish from EPlaunch). Perhaps our workflow was flawed, but v2.8 into v8.8 generated fatal errors in E+. If that is a valid option, it could allow you to leverage the ease of BEopt and avoid the season schedule by running in E+, unless you stay in E+ entirely. What are you attempting needing BEopt?

@shorowit and @EBEdwards. I appreciate the help from both of you. I have actually generated the first draft in Beopt and exported its E+ file (V8.8) and I have compared the exported E+ file with the E+ file that I have for PNNL's building. However, after a lot of investigation, I think the resistance load is the main culprit that I have. The resistance load kicks on pretty often in E+ file compared to the E+ exported from BEopt. Not sure what is the reason for this but I would appreciate any ideas.
