I am trying to determine the the most efficient / cost effective heating and cooling solution for a home I am modeling. When I select various options in Parametric mode, I understand that all cases are considered - even some that don't make much sense. Is there a way to determine the best case that meets comfort requirements?
You can look at unmet hours for each point in the CSV-like detailed report for your case. Although, that's a cumulative value across the whole heating/cooling season. It's possible some efficient packages will have high values due to consistently missing your set points by a small amount, which you'd have to check the daily report to verify, but I should think this is not too likely if you're not in an extreme climate, using unusual set points or have selected manually sized equipment.

Can you give an example of a heating/cooling solution that you think doesn't make sense?
I believe BeOpt uses hourly timesteps and with energyplus, surface temperatures would be generated for every surface at each timestep. So theoretically, it should be possible to complete pmv/ppd calcs with the output data to analyze ASHRAE 55 thermal comfort for each case. I'm not sure the software outputs all this info without the user making custom changes, and I've never tried looking into this myself so can't give a specific solution. Thought I'd share what I know at any rate in case it's of use.
