construction application on external horizontal surface

Hi everyone, my question is this: When applying a construction on an external horizontal surface, how do "inside" and "outside" of the construction correspond to "up" and "down" of the surface? In my case I have a balcony, which has off-white marble as coating material ("up") and plaster on the other side ("down"). How can I ascertain that the marble will be assigned "up" and plaster "down"?

Thanks

Can you add tag for or identify what simulation engine you are using? Also, are you using a shading surface for the balcony?

Shading is one of the things I want to investigate. I am modelling a building with several storeys of 3,5 meters height and the research is about the impact of external shading.

Hi Eva,

In OpenStudio terms:

Model surface: the "outside" side is the direction the surface normal points, following the right hand rule. Construction: the first material listed is considered the "outside".

In your translated Radiance model, the "outside" material's visible reflectance is used for the shading surface.
