Multi-storey Geometry Error – Merging of Floors

I've been trying to generate geometry of a 4 storey building for the past one month. Unfortunately, every time I save and close the file in .osm, the floors overlap resulting in recreating the geometry from scratch.

The work flow used is :

Cad Drawing with reference as core - Export as Dxf - Created a new space in open studio - Extrude using "Set attributes with building storey" - Save .osm file

Before Closing the file with completed Geometry(.osm) - ----- After opening the same file in (.osm)

Hi Neal, I am using Autocad - Sketchup Make 2017 - OpenStudio 2.6. Thanks! I'll improve the tags.

What do you mean "Set attributes with building storey"? This just sets attributes for existing spaces, it doesn't create new OpenStudio spaces. How do you "extrude" with that?

Hi, the model has been extruded using " create space from diagram" tool, later using set attributes the storey's have been set.

If you are importing the DXF of floor plans in the model, you could select multiple floor area portions in SketchUp that should have the same floor-to-ceiling height and simultaneously create Spaces using the "Create Spaces from Diagram" tool. That would definitely be faster than creating Spaces individually. From the workflow in your original post, it kind of sounds like you are only creating one Space for the whole model, instead of one Space for each room in the model -- make sure to use multiple Spaces instead of one.

Also, be sure that you are saving the .osm file using the menu Extensions, OpenStudio/File/Save OpenStudio Model and not the .skp file using the menu File/Save or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+S.

I would recommend looking at NREL's tutorial videos for OpenStudio on YouTube. These videos may be years old, but the general process is still very similar.

Hi Aaron. thank you for your response. I have modeled in both the above mentioned ways and saved using extension manager but still the problem. In all the above methods, the created geometry of some floors goes missing, merged or moved from the reference core location.

It looks like you have some spaces within spaces, which will definitely cause errors. Try cleaning up the geometry by separating out the floor plan floor-by-floor, exploding it, re-drawing to make sure there aren't spaces within spaces, then creating spaces from diagram.

Once you've done that, re-lay the floors back on top of each other, save, then go into the OpenStudio App and apply the intersect + surface matching BCL measure.

You can then re-open the model in Sketchup and make sure your geometry is ok with Extensions -> OpenStudio User Scripts -> Reports -> OSM Diagnostic Script
