How does one view output variables in ResultsViewer?

Hello,

I have selected some possible output variables, from the corresponding tab in Open Studio, such as surface inside/outside face temperature, zone air humidity ratio and zone air temperature, zone exterior windows total transmitted beam solar radiation energy, zone infiltration sensible heat gain energy and others, but can' t find them anywhere in the results. In which file are they supposed to be?

@macumber and @MatthewSteen, I'm also seeing this issue of a blank list of output variables in ResultsViewer for Mac users during workshops. Any ideas?

In OpenStudio the OutputVariables are included in the eplusout.sql which can be viewed using ResultsViewer. From the Results tab in OS you can open this file using the RV button in the upper right. The file itself is located in the OSM file directory: osm file name folder > run > EnergyPlus.

OpenStudio doesn't produce the CSV file containing the OutputVariables yet. However, if you'd like the output in this format you can run the out.idf file in the osm file name folder > run > EnergyPlusPreProcess folder through EnergyPlus directly using EP-Launch. There are several previous questions about how to do this.

Alternatively, you can enter into the osm file name folder > run > EnergyPlus directory in a command prompt and run the ReadVarsESO command C:\EnergyPlusV8-2-0\PostProcess\ReadVarsESO.exe. This will create the output csv file without needing to rerun the IDF.

Good point @macumber. It's also helpful to add the C:\EnergyPlusV8-2-0\PostProcess folder to the system path to be able to run readvarseso in any directory from the command line. On Windows this can be done here: Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Environment Variables > Path.

Thanks guys for the answers. I am working on a Mac and I prefer using the results viewer for the results. But I still can't find the extra output variables that I mentioned! I only see the default results where you told me :(

@ellimelimeli you should be able to see these results in ResultsViewer. Are you running whole year annual simulations? Can you attach a screenshot of what you do see in ResultsViewer?

@macumber, @MatthewSteen Guys, has the screenshot of the table contents helped at all? I attached it to the original question. Do you have any idea of what I could be doing wrong???

Is it working on Windows? Which version are you using, 1.14? I believe that there might have been a problem opening ResultsViewer from the run tab on Mac. I think it did work if you launched ResultsViewer separately and browsed to the sql file. I also think @Kyle Benne fixed this for the 2.1.0 release.

Yes, the issue was trying to open ResultsViewer from the Results tab in OpenStudio v1.14 on Mac. ResultsViewer would open, but the left window that normally shows the list of potential output variables was blank. With ResultsViewer open, we could manually open the SQL file and then the output variables would appear. There is a Github issue open for this, but it doesn't look like it's closed yet. If @Kyle Benne has fixed this for v2.1, then that's great!

Hi. I am wondering if there is a solution to this issue. I have added output variables but cannot find the results viewer OS 2.3.0 (on a mac) or anyway to view the hourly output. The DView crashed when I try to open the eplusout.sql. thx
