OpenStudio 1.6.0 unable to run EnergyPlus 8.2.

OpenStudio 1.6.0 comes with EnergyPlus 8.2., which is automatically installed in a subdirectory of OpenStudio. The installer and the tool search apparently do not recognize if EnergyPlus 8.2. is already installed in a different directory (e.g. D:\EnergyPlus 8.2.0). When trying to start an EP-Simulation from OpenStudio however, this fails already at the stage of idf expansion. Possibly the OpenStudio installation of EnergyPlus and the already existing installation of EP 8.2. are interfering.

I am reluctant to de-install the previous EP 8.2. version, because I want to use EnergyPlus also independently of OpenStudio.

Do I need to de-install EnergyPlus 8.2. before OpenStudio 1.6. is installed ?

Interference is possible. We have tested for various scenarios but this is new stuff and more complicated than I'd like to admit so it is possible that something is wrong. Can you do some testing for us and temporarily remove your external installation?

I should add that OpenStudio looks for the copy of EnergyPlus that is bundled with OS first. Furthermore OS is very picky about which version of E+ it looks for, specifically 8.2.0-Update 1

You can create a shortcut for the EnergyPlus 8.2 that comes with OS and launch it independently without going to the EP Launch inside the OS program file folder. This way, the standalone EPlus installation is no longer needed.

I think OpenStudio 1.6.0 32 bit installs EnergyPlus 8.2.0 64 bits. I have MS Windows 7 32 bits. I installed OpenStudio 1.6.0 32 bits and EnergyPlus installed automatically didn’t work. I deleted this EnergyPlus directory and installed EnergyPlus 8.2.0 32 bits from the official website. Then, I run SCAN FOR TOOLS and selected the new EnergyPlus. Now it works fine.

SOLVED - Congratulations ! This solves the problem: After deleting the EnergyPlus 8.2.0 subdirectory in the OpenStudio 1.6.0 installation, now the tool search worked properly and discovered the external EnergyPlus 8.2.0 installation, and now OpenStudio 1.6.0 is running OK. I am voting your answer up.

Hmm, this indicates that something in our installer is not working correctly. We don't want to encourage users to delete the version of EnergyPlus that our installer installs.

Have you tried using scan for tools under the preferences menu in the OpenStudio application? It may fix the issue or looking at what it finds may help us troubleshoot why it isn't finding the version of EnergyPlus installed with OpenStudio. If you see an extra version of 8.2 that isn't the one within shared resources, you can try removing it as a tool in the dialog shown below vs. deleting it.

I have both E+ 8.2 and OS 1.6.0 installed, and it works fine. Running File>Scan for Tools should allow you to tell OS which E+ to use.

aparker's comment is interesting (no interference ?): I have run the SCAN FOR TOOLS, but in my MS Windows7 installation, it did not discover the (extra) EP 8.2.0 installation on drive D:. I am considering to de-install the stand-alone EP 8.2.0 and re-install OpenStudio 1.6. with the bundled EP8.2.0. I have also already thought of manually inserting desktop shortcuts for running the bundled EP 8.2.

TEST REPORT: OPERATING SYSTEM = MS WINDOWS7 32 Bit Running updated osm models (converted from 1.4.0 to 1.6.0) with OpenStudio 1.6.0 produced the following results: (1) OpenStudio produced an out.idf file, while in the process of the "json" user file script a stderr file was produced with the following messages: DL is deprecated, please use Fiddle QSslSocket: cannot resolve TLSv11clientmethod QSslSocket: cannot resolve TLSv12clientmethod QSslSocket: cannot resolve TLSv11servermethod QSslSocket: cannot resolve TLSv12servermethod QSslSocket: cannot resolve SSLselectnextproto QSslSocket: cannot resolve SSLCTXsetnextprotoselectcb QSslSocket: cannot resolve SSLget0nextproto_negotiated

(2) when I tried to start EP simulations with the out.idf file via EP-Launcher, a) the OpenStudio Version of EP 8.2.0 crashed (regularly) b) the stand-alone version of EP 8.2.0 successfully completed the simulations

(3) after de-installing the separate stand-alone version of EP8.2.0, OpenStudio still was unable to run EnergyPlus (!).

 During de-installation(s) of EnergyPlus versions, there is the option of not removing several DLLs,
 because they might still be needed by other programs: I chose not to have these DLLs removed.

(4) Testing execution of the same osm models with the Linux version of OpenStudio 1.6.0 produced better results: these simulations were completed successfully.

(5) NEXT TESTS:

 de-install OpenStudio 1.6.0;  
 re-install OpenStudio 1.6.0;
 trying to run simulations from osm models fails the same way as described in (1)

 re-install extra EP 8.2.0 on separate drive.
 Now I can at least run simulations again by procedure  (2b)

CONCLUSION: On my Windows7 system (32bit), the bundled EnergyPlus 8.2.0 is useless, and in order to perform simulations I need an extra EP 8.2.0 installation. BUT PROBLEM IS SOLVED BY JOREGONS ANSWER.

The QSslSocket socket warnings always show up, and don't indicate a problem. Look in the eplusout.err file to see why EnergyPlus failed.

if simulations are started by OpenStudio 1.6.0, only an out.idf is produced, and no eplusout.err file, because the process is stopped before running any simulation.

It sounds like the issue was a 64 bit build of EnergyPlus being included in the 32 bit packages. We'll have this fixed in 1.9.0.
