Create Space from Diagram and Layers

Hello,

new to Sketchup/OpenStudio, there is something that I can't understand on my own; LAYERS. I think they are the source to my issue.

I am creating a diagram in a default "Layer 0". I then use the "create space from diagram" OpenStudio function to transform my diagram into spaces. Once the function ran, it creates new layers (OpenStudio - Space Diagram, and OpenStudio::Model::Space). That's when I get lost.

From there, I am trying to draw geometries such as windows and doors. But what layer do I now use? The default layer or one of the layers created by the Create Space from Diagram function?? Also, I noticed the project loose geometry function creates a layer too. It's confusing.

My guess is everything is drawn in the default layer, and then I should be using OpenStudio functions to transfer everything into auto-populated OPenStudio layers. For example, I would draw windows in my layer 0. Then using "Project loose geometry" tool, they will be transferred to a new OpenStudio layer.

And if anyone has good general info on how Sketchup/OpenStudio work together, I'd take it too. I'm really confused by the saving process.

Thank you so much!

Hi @allheilyb1

NREL has some very useful tutorials for Openstudio users. These videos should answer most of your basic questions about working with OpenStudio and Sketchup. Take a look at the videos here If you still run into issues, you can ask them here.

Good luck with your model!
