I am new to OS and just downloaded the legacy plugin and I was following the NREL tutorials. I tried to save my file in sketchup and open it in open studio. The file is saved as .FILE and OS doesn't recognise it. When i manually saved it with .osm (for instance like : ExampleBuilding.osm), open studio couldn't open it. Any comments?
If you want to create an OpenStudio Model (*.osm) you need the full OpenStudio Suite.
Don't get confused, there are two different products:
*.osm file - that you can open in the OpenStudio Application.*.idf files and has some extra capabilities like launching simulations directly from Sketchup and viewing select results.The OpenStudio Suite is more comprehensive, but the Legacy OpenStudio Plugin is still very relevant if your goal is to work with pure EnergyPlus *.idf files.
One caveat of the OpenStudio Suite is that it cannot reverse translate - meaning translate an *.idf file to an *.osm file - many aspects of an *.idf file. Rule of thumb: anything else than geometry, internal loads and schedules will not be translated. So if you have an already created EnergyPlus model (*.idf), then the Legacy OpenStudio Plugin is a tool of choice!
Additionally, when you use either of these two products, do not use Sketchup's built-in "Save/Save As" command but the one provided by the plugin. For example, if you use the Full OpenStudio Suite, use the "Save OpenStudio Model" button of the OpenStudio toolbar, as highlighted in the OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in Interface Guide
Thanks Julien, I have spent 2 days and still cannot get ride of installation issues with OS. 1- OS installation instruction asks for Sketchup 2016 which is no longer available from sketch up website. 2- When I installed sketch up 2017, it automatically uploaded legacy plugin which I wasnt able to save with it in any format. 3- Tried installing version 32 bit for both sketchup and OS and got this error: Error: Unable to find valid executable while creating local process: C:/program files/Open Studio 1.14.0/ruby-install/ruby/bin\ruby.exe

You can also use the developper (think potentially unstable and not yet recommended for production work...) releases after 2.0.1 that now support Sketchup 2017.
Thanks Julien, I have asked OS support to send me the link to Sketch up 2016, will wait to see what they respond.

You can save your OpenStudio model by 1) Files:Save as: .osm or by 2) OS icon Save the OpenStudio as a new file .osm .
Note that if you save your file initially in .skp, it will not be possible to open your model in .osm file
Is there an error message that appears?
Hi Borm, by 2) OS icon Save the OpenStudio as a new file .osm . As I said the Legacy version I have installed doesnt have this Icon
by 1) Files:Save as: .osm , it doesnt allow to select any file type, save as is blank!
