The python actors rely indeed on Jython and have thus the limitations you encountered. Have you tried using the SystemCommand actor actor (http://simulationresearch.lbl.gov/bcvtb/releases/latest/doc/manual/tit-CustomExeCon.xhtml) which allows to call any script?
